Looking for the best sushi places in Pittsburgh? Well look no further! Pittsburgh’s sushi scene continues to flourish and these Yinzers are showcasing an impressive line of establishments that cater to every sushi lover’s dream. We’ve compiled a list of what we think are the best sushi restaurants based on ours and others reviews of these Pittsburgh Sushi restaurants.
1. Mola is a sushi haven nestled in the East Liberty/ Shadyside area of Pittsburgh. Mola offers a menu that combines traditional sushi techniques with contemporary flavors, especially experienced in some of their yummy poke bowls. Inside this spot is known for its minimalist decor and simple design, allowing the vibrant dishes to take center stage. Mola is highly committed to fresh high-quality ingredients where this is evident in every bite, from classic nigiri and sashimi to inventive rolls that cater to the adventurous diner. Our Favorite roll here is Alaskan King Salmon Roe.
2. Gi-jin, on the other hand, brings from what we’ve discovered, a slice of Tokyo’s izakaya culture to Pittsburgh, with an extensive menu that goes beyond sushi to include a variety of Japanese small plates. The ambiance is very cozy, and guests get a closer look into Japanese culture more than any sushi restaurant on this list. This place caters more so to the sashimi lovers (no rice) and the sashimi plate here is fantastic! Bring your wallet because this place is on the expensive side.
3. Umi – Shadyside’s Umi is where sushi, like Gi-jin takes another sophisticated turn. Here, each dish is a tribute to the craft, from the seven- to eleven-course omakase to the a la carte plates that exhibit the pure flavors and intricate artistry of sushi. This place is just as upscale as Gi-jin where you can expect a hefty bill at the end but the sushi and sashimi is out of this world!
4.Sushi Kim 2 is the sequel to the beloved Sushi Kim restaurant, renowned for its traditional Korean and Japanese dishes. This establishment prides itself on a diverse menu that includes a wide range of sushi and sashimi options, alongside Korean specialties, offering a unique dining experience that bridges the culinary traditions of both countries. One of the best dishes that we had here was Kim’s Spicy combo roll.
5. Umami – Perched atop Round Corner Cantina in the vibrant neighborhood of Lawrenceville, this place is not the easiest to find.. BUT Umami is certainly worth the hunt because is is certainly one of the best in the Burgh. This izakaya, or Japanese pub, delivers a sensorial escapade with a wide range of sushi, ramen, and robatayaki, accompanied by an impressive sake and Japanese beer menu, offering a cosmopolitan edge to Pittsburgh’s sushi scene. Super cool place and I would totally recommend trying the spicy tuna hand roll for sushi and then one of their endless unusual items on their menu that may sound crazy but end in you finding something your taste buds love!
6. Little Tokyo – Nestled in the community-oriented Mt. Lebanon, Little Tokyo is not just another sushi joint; it’s a slice of Japanese cuisine heaven. A bit less high scale as the others mentioned on the list but Little Tokyo does not substitute that for quality. Our favorite roll here was the spicy tuna tartar.
7. Social House 7 – Where the heart of Pittsburgh’s downtown meets the soul of Asian cuisine, Social House 7 stands tall. Another great sushi restaurant located in the downtown area, Social House 7 has a solid sushi line up and great flavor in each roll. We loved the Poke Aloha Roll.
8. Atarashi – The establishment formerly known as Sushi Fuku, a Pitt Panther student favorite, now rebranded as Atarashi, offers a modern twist to sushi. With multiple locations across the city, they invite patrons to design their own sushi adventure with customizable rolls, poke bowls, and bento boxes. If you stop down, I would recommend trying out one of their custom poke bowls matched with a roll of your choice.
9. Penn Avenue Fish Company – A champion of sustainable seafood, this establishment in the Strip District goes beyond its market roots to provide sushi that’s fresh as they come. Typically known for other seafood dishes, this restaurant deserves to be added to the list for how delicious and fresh their sushi selection is. The Pretty Girl roll there is to die for!
10. Diners 2+1 – For yinz down near the Squirrel Hill area, Diners 2+1 presents an encyclopedia of sushi options. From lunch specials to expansive dinner selections, this spot is a haven for variety, freshness, and sushi crafted with a personal touch. Great sushi for a fair price! Our Favorite roll here is the Benny Roll.
Each of these establishments tells its own story through sushi, serving up both slices of raw excellence and rolls filled with cultural fusions. Pittsburgh’s sushi spots range from high class amazing experiences to just plain good sushi for an affordable price. Whether you seek the comfort of traditional flavors or the thrill of contemporary creations, Pittsburgh’s sushi landscape offers a palate for exploration and delight.
